Scrape, wash, prime, paint
The order does most of the work. Loose paint is scraped back to something solid, power washing clears chalk, dirt and mildew, bare patches get primed, and only then does the topcoat go on. Brush roll painting gives siding and trim an even film that gets worked into the grain instead of sitting on top of it.
Wood is its own job. Wood staining and siding work, and staining generally, keep the grain of a cedar deck or a plank fence showing through instead of hiding it. Deck painting suits tired boards that need full coverage, and painting for exterior buildings carries the same method up the wall of a larger commercial property.
